This year’s cause

This year’s race will support the local organization Good in the Hood.
Good in the Hood is an organization that works collaboratively to feed the future, dedicated to changing lives together with simple acts of kindness. Partnered with the South Washington County School District (833), Good in the Hood provides food subsidies for hungry students in K-12 grades. The current trends show that nearly 20% of students miss meals each week and suffer from food insecurity. Good in the Hood has partnered with local schools to provide easy-to-prepare food items for students that have indicated a need for a bit of extra help. Each Friday volunteers, staff and faculty members hand out food packs containing non-perishable weekend food subsidies, with a weekend pack equivalent to three meals.

Local schools include:
·         Newport Elementary
·         Crestview Elementary
·         Pullman Elementary
·         Oltman Middle
·         Park High
·         Woodbury High
·         Alternative Learning Center
·         Pathways School

Additionally, Good in the Hood operates several other programs to inspire individuals, families and neighborhoods to take responsibility and ownership for growth, improvement and well-being of their personal lives and community.

At the Ugly Christmas Sweater 5K, we will also support Good in the Hood’s “Shoe Away Hunger” initiative by hosting a shoe drive at the event. Attendees can bring new or gently-used footwear including sneakers, sports shoes, casual shoes, boots, flip flops, ice skates, etc. Donations should be tied or banded together, or placed in a plastic bag to keep them dry.  For every pair of gently-used footwear received, the Shoe Away Hunger program is able to feed one more person with up to seven days.

Shoe donations will also be accepted at TheAlley Church in the weeks leading up to the event on Dec. 4.
